Is it possible for artificial intelligence to discover a new kind of physics? It was decided to test this question by a team of roboticists at Columbia Engineering.
The researchers developed an artificial intelligence program that detected physical phenomena and discovered relevant variables, which are the preliminaries of any theory of physics.
Researchers provided the AI program with raw video footage of phenomena for which they already had an answer. In the video, there is a swinging double-pendulum that has four 'state variables': angle and angular velocity for each arm of the double-pendulum.
After several hours of analysis, the AI system produced a nearly accurate answer of 4.7 variables. It was close enough for us, says Hod Lipson, director of Columbia's Creative Machines Lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
As the AI was only provided with raw video footage without any knowledge of physics or geometry. However, we were interested in knowing what the variables were rather than simply their numbers.
The AI program chose two variables that corresponded roughly to the angles of the arms, but the other two are unknown.
Boyuan Chen, an assistant professor at Duke University, says that they tried correlating the other variables with anything and everything they could think of: angular and linear velocities, kinetic and potential energy, and different combinations of known qualities. “But nothing matched perfectly.
As the program makes good predictions, Dr.Chen believes it found a valid set of four variables but says he does not yet understand its mathematical language.
Scientists began feeding the computer program videos of systems for which they did not know the explicit variable answer. In the first video, an 'air dancer' is seen rising and falling in front of a used car lot.
Eight variables were returned from that video by the AI program. As soon as the program was fed a video of a lava lamp, the program returned the same number of variables. Following the analysis of a video clip containing flames from a fireplace, the program returned 24 variables.
According to the study, the number of variables remained the same every time the AI program was restarted. Nevertheless, the specific variables differed. In this way, it is demonstrated that there are alternative ways to describe the universe.
I have always wondered if we encountered an intelligent alien race, would they find the same physical laws that we do, or might they describe the universe in a different manner,' Lipson remarks.
Scientists believe this AI system can help them uncover complex phenomena in a variety of fields, including biology and cosmology.
