The headquarters of Alphabet Inc's Google is combining the eyes and arms of physical robots with the knowledge and conversation skills of virtual chatbots to make it easier to fetch drinks and snacks from the breakrooms for its employees.
The mechanical waiters, shown to reporters last week, embody an artificial intelligence breakthrough that prepares the way for a variety of multipurpose robots as effective as ones that perform single, structured tasks.
The Google robots are not yet available for sale. Although they perform only a few dozen simple tasks, Google has not yet incorporated its 'OK, Google' summoning feature into them.
As Meta Platforms Inc and others have experienced, adoption may eventually be stifled due to fears that robots could become surveillance machines or be equipped with chat capabilities triggering offensive responses.
The research on robots of Microsoft Corp and Amazon.com Inc is similar.' The direct commercial impact won't be clear for a while,' said Vincent Vanhoucke, senior director of Google's robotics research.
The robot recognizes that grabbing a sponge is a much easier and more sensible response than making an apology for having caused the mess in the first place when it is asked to assist in the cleanup after a spill.
As the robots interpret naturally spoken commands, they weigh the options that are available against their capabilities and calculate the steps that are needed to achieve the request.
With the use of language technology, robots can gain an understanding of the world with the help of Wikipedia, social media platforms, and other sites that provide information on the web.
Similar tech is behind chatbots or virtual assistants, but the use of AI for robots has yet to be applied in this vast way, Google has said. An April research paper described the effort.
The company said in a blog post on Tuesday that it has incorporated more sophisticated language AI since then to improve the robots' ability to understand commands from 61% to 74%, according to the company's blog.
