Google is terminating Assistant's ability to set reminders based on location

One of Google Assistant's most beneficial capabilities for those who are aware of it is the ability to set location-based reminders.

It allows people to choose a location and receive an alert when they arrive thereĀ  for example, a user can say 'Remind me to call [name of their friend] in NYC,' and Assistant will give them a reminder as soon as they enter the city.

The bad news is that individuals who rely on the feature to remind them to go to the grocery store or fill up their car tanks when they pass by a petrol station will soon be out of luck.

'The option to make reminders for a specific place is going away soon,' Google added to the Assistant Help page.

In 2018, Google released the ability to set location-based reminders via Google Home devices, trailing after Apple and Amazon in offering the feature.

According to 9to5Google, Google has only recently begun telling customers who have set reminders with a location that the capability is being phased out.

It didn't explain why, instead recommending setting reminders for a specific time or creating routines for a specific location.

Users will be able to ask Assistant to conduct a number of activities based on where they are in the world.

Google hasn't given a firm date for the feature's demise, but 9to5Google reports that it will be gone by the end of the year.

It could be part of Google's efforts to make room for the long-awaited 'Memory' upgrade for Assistant, according to the company.

It aims to turn the voice assistant into a useful organiser, allowing users to keep material, photographs, reminders, and other objects in a single location with a smart search capability.
