In the novel Nocturne, the protagonist Richter is a distant descendant of the vampire hunter Trevor Belmont and the sorceress Sypha Belnades.

The story focuses on Richter's exploits as a vampire hunter in late 18th-century France, during the time of the French Revolution.

Maria Renard, herself a formidable magic user with her own distant link to the Belmont legacy, will join forces with Richter in this new instalment of the series.

Maria Renard previously appeared alongside Richter as a little girl in Rondo of Blood.
