It's not uncommon for Apple to announce new hardware at WWDC, but for 2022, they decided to do things differently. Aside from all of the new software features the company unveiled during today's keynote, Apple also announced an updated MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro.
Here's everything we know about pre-ordering the latest MacBooks with Apple's new M2 chipset, which will provide significant performance gains.
In July, Apple and authorized retailers will begin accepting pre-orders for the M2 MacBook Air for $1,199. The MacBook Air M1 will remain in the lineup and will cost $999.
The new Air opts for an all-new, squared-off design instead of the wedge shape of previous Airs. Even so, it remains a fanless laptop, so it will run quietly no matter how hard you push it. It measures 11.3mm thick and weighs 2.7 pounds, so it is no less svelte than before.
Apple claims it will have improved CPU and GPU performance by 18 percent and 35 percent, respectively, over the M1 chipset, so if you're upgrading from a 2020 MacBook Air, you'll notice the difference.
A 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display with one billion colors has also been updated by Apple, making it 25 percent brighter than the previous notebook's display.
It does not have Center Stage capabilities. Apple claims the new Air will have an 18-hour battery life, and a 30-minute charger will refill it 50 percent in just 30 minutes.
Despite the fact that two Thunderbolt ports (along with a headphone jack) still make up most of the connections, Apple has brought back a MagSafe charging port on this laptop. As a result, you won't have to occupy a Thunderbolt port every time you power up the computer.
Apple and authorized retailers will be offering the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M2 starting in July for $1,299. The device will be available in two colors: silver and space gray.
Apple focused on the guts and overall efficiency of the M2-powered MacBook Pro instead of a design facelift like it did with the updated MacBook Air.
The Pro M2 boasts an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU that should provide up to 40% faster performance when playing graphics-intensive games and working with apps like Affinity Photo.
Video-playback battery life on the laptop will be up to 20 hours, and it can support up to 24GB of RAM and 2TB of onboard storage.
