Apple will conduct its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) from June 6-10, and the Internet is reporting that the company will announce everything from a redesigned iPad and refreshed MacBook Air to a mixed reality headset and ever-present iPhone.
New leaks suggest that Apple will also reveal a new Mac mini featuring an M2 processor. 'B&H Photo Video' is offering an 'Apple MAC MINI 8/256 M2' for sale online(Opens in a new window). This is probably a model with an M2 chip, 8 GB of memory, and 256 GB of storage
Apple would undoubtedly release a Mac mini with an M2 chip along with the new MacBook Air. The M1 chip was introduced with the new MacBook Air, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro models in 2020; maintaining some degree of parity across those product lines makes sense.
B&H Photo Video also has a listing for a 'Mac mini tower with an M1 pro chip, eight GB of memory, and 256 GB of storage.'
Most of this makes sense-it appears to be a Mac mini with an M1 pro chip, as well as 8 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage. The reference to a 'tower' is a bit more difficult to understand.
It would not be a surprise if that were the case. Mac Pro was most recently upgraded in 2019, and every other Mac has either been updated with the M1 chip or discontinued.
In practice, Apple is unlikely to release a Mac Pro with an M1 Pro instead of an M2, but it's possible that the base model M2 would not be able to compete with later versions of the M1, given Apple's staggered release schedule. The latest branding may not be as important as the performance.
We'll find out very soon... unless Apple chooses not to announce anything important at WWDC. Then expect rumors and leaks to continue for several months (or years) regarding the fate of these products. Hopefully there will be an official announcement soon.
