Google Maps now provides air quality information in your local area, just in time for summer

The Nest Hub devices got an update during an especially dicey wildfire season that added a local air quality rating to the home screen, right next to the weather. Earlier this month, Google added a new  in advance of summer 2022: maps of air quality on your area.

This change was announced by Google more than a year ago. The air quality rating ranges from zero to 400, with lower numbers being better.

When using Google Maps app, tap the layers icon near the top right hand corner, then select Air Quality under Map details. Google says the data comes from government agencies such as the EPA, as well as hyper-local air quality measurement provider PurpleAir.

Both this feature and one that adds a weather layer to Maps were originally going to launch 'in the coming months' - so it seems like Google is a little behind schedule.

The timing, however, suggests there's a good chance we'll see that weather layer as soon as possible.
