iPhone users have been missing a feature in iOS 16's fifth beta version: The battery percentage at the top of the screen.

Apple's iPhone X, released in 2017, had a notched display that did not leave much room for the battery status indicator.

Instead, Apple hid it in the notifications shade, which you can access by swiping down. Except on iPhones with home buttons, it has remained hidden there ever since.

Apple's iOS 16 beta version features a battery percentage that appears as a number inside the battery icon, leaving room for cell signal information and Wi-Fi status.

The result is that you can easily see your exact percentage without having to swipe down. A battery-status display on Apple's next iPhone could also be useful since you'd be able to check it without touching it.

A spokesperson for Apple declined to comment on whether the battery percentage would make it into iOS 16.

There is only a public beta and a developer beta available for the update at the moment. It's expected that Apple will announce the iPhone 14 in September when the new iPhone software is expected to launch.

It's not available in the public preview yet, but you'll be able to see the battery percentage in the latest iOS 16 developer beta.

The option can be toggled on by going to Settings, selecting Battery, and selecting Battery Percentage.
