Apple continues to update and release new products, all while strengthening its global dominance bid. Today at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference 2022, several announcements and teases regarding iOS 16 were announced, which will feature some hotly anticipated tech and some tweaks that will likely cause controversy. The following are the key announcements from WWDC 2022.
Among the features introduced in iOS 15 is a useful tool called 'Visual Look Up,' which enhances the ability to find text in photos. It'll now be possible to look up and translate text within an image, as well as perform currency conversions, which seems very convenient.
Among the new features has been the ability to edit or retract recently sent messages, which on the surface seems like it could lead to a world of miscommunication and gaslighting.
However, a crucial footnote states that 'Users can edit or recall a message up to 15 minutes after sending it, or recover recently deleted messages for up to 30 days after deletion.' According to the press release's short video demonstration, it is unclear whether the person you're texting will be notified you either unsent or altered a message.
Protect your phone in style. An appealing aesthetic update to iOS 16 is the revamped lock screen, which provides users with more font and color options, as well as creates a pop-out effect that accentuates your lock image in relation to the time, date, and new widgets inspired by the Apple Watch.
Additionally, users can create multiple different lock screens to toggle between for different purposes. The weather and astronomy lock screen wallpapers can also add some dynamism and are sure to appeal to nature lovers who love staring at their phones.
The 'Focus' option has also been expanded, so you can restrict what apps such as Calendar, Messages, and Safari show you based on the emphasis you choose. Four focuses are shown in the PR blast: Do Not Disturb, Personal, Work, and Sleep, but custom focuses can be created as well.
As part of the new lock screen, you will also be able to see 'Live Activities,' such as the location of your Uber, when your Thai food will be delivered, and how many three-pointers Steph Curry has hit against your favorite team, etc.
Apple Pay Later takes on Klarna and its ilk. It comes as no surprise that Apple is entering the deferred payment plan industry. iOS 16 will feature Apple Pay Later, the company's answer to Klarna, Afterpay, and Affirm.
From the first two months of 2020 to the first two months of 2021, 'buy now pay later' usage more than doubled. Deferred payment plans present a risk factor, however. According to a survey conducted by Lending Tree published in April 2021, “two out of three people who have used 'buy now, pay later financing have spent more than they would have otherwise.”
Additionally, the Health app has a function for managing and tracking medication usage, Apple News has been updated with a sports focus, and the iCloud Shared Photo Library supports up to six people.
Through the new Safety Check function, a user can quickly revoke information-sharing access (e.g. to iCloud and location data) from an abusive partner. A user can disable messaging from any device besides their physical phone by using Safety Check.
iOS 16 is only available for iPhone 8 or later, so those who have kept an iPhone intact since 2015 or 2016 will need to upgrade to take advantage of these new features.
