Thousands of new smart home devices could be supported by Samsung SmartThings next year

SmartThings will play a significant role in Samsung's future plans. The company announced at CES 2022 its membership in the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA) in an effort to improve compatibility with other brands in the space - and new data shows that deal is beginning to pay off.

Samsung will likely demonstrate the technology it's working on for HCA at IFA 2022 in Berlin on September 2 based on ETNews. A single app will control multiple appliances including TVs, refrigerators, and air conditioners, and the report states that the technology for this has 'entered a last-minute technical review and will be finalized' at the event.

The Samsung Group is a member of the Home Connectivity Alliance, along with Arçelik, Electrolux, Haier, GE Appliances, and Trane. There are five member companies: American Standard, Beko, Grundig, Leader, and Vestel.

Next year, these brands will be able to control their devices through a single application that will feature an innovative smart home environment. Samsung's SmartThings app, which should receive an update that enhances its capabilities, is obviously that app.

Choi Yun-ho, chairman of HCA and Samsung IoT team leader, emphasizes that this is going to be more subtle and fundamentally different from the nascent cross-ecosystem smart home standard Matter.
