In Europe, Google Maps will be given an additional function for planning routes by car: fuel- and energy-saving routes are being implemented.
An alternative route is displayed when it saves more energy. Various media reports confirm this. In the US and Canada, the group had already introduced fuel-saving routes.
In June, there were already signs that this extra would start in Europe soon. The time has come for the release.
The new features announced for Germany have been announced on Google's company blog and explained in detail. Future versions will display the route with the lowest energy
Consumption as well as the fastest route. It may, however, be the most energy-efficient route for some routes as well as the fastest. The map will then only display one route.
Google Maps displays the route with the lowest energy consumption as a small leaf symbol that indicates 'environmentally friendly'. For the special route, Google also provides a percentage of possible savings.
Various factors, such as route length, road slope, and traffic congestion, are considered by Google when calculating potential fuel consumption.
In this case, artificial intelligence is used. The feature would 'save CO2 emissions as much as taking 100,000 cars off the road in the US and Canada,' Google writes. It's quite encouraging to hear that.
You can also save your engine type in the settings to tailor the route planner even further. You can currently choose between petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric drive.
The release will be gradual. In the coming weeks, Google Maps users on iOS and Android should be able to access fuel-saving routes in Germany and other major European countries.
