2022's first supermoon will be the Strawberry Moon

This month isn't just the start of summer. Astronomy buffs can also look forward to supermoon season in June.

A supermoon is an annual event that occurs in a series of three or four and presents sky watchers and photographers with a unique chance to observe Earth's celestial companion.

With three supermoons this year, the first rise on Monday into Tuesday.A 1979 astrologer coined the viral nickname, but it has some astronomical merit.

Rather than orbiting in a perfect circle, the moon orbits around the Earth in the shape of a misshapen oval called an ellipse. Because of this, the moon is sometimes closer to the Earth (perigee) and sometimes farther away (apogee).

Supermoons are full moons that occur at the same time as the moon is near perigee, so they appear larger and brighter than other full moons throughout the year. In contrast, a full moon that occurs near apogee appears slightly smaller and is called a micro moon.

The difference between these two types of full moons is almost imperceptible and can only be seen in a side-by-side photo comparison.

Even though it is not visible to the naked eye, its appearance can still have an impact on Earth.

'When the moon is close to Earth, Earth's diameter is a slightly larger fraction of Earth-moon distance,' NASA explained.

Supermoons can also cause high tides to be higher than normal, which could result in coastal flooding. In the days surrounding a supermoon, a tropical storm or hurricane can worsen the situation.
