Reports from the Chinese state media claim that the nation's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) has detected what may be signals from 'extraterrestrial civilizations'. FAST is a radio telescope that picks up signals from space.
In a report published Tuesday, researchers from Beijing Normal University presented their findings. Researchers claim to have identified 'several cases of possible technological traces of extraterrestrial civilizations from outer space,' which include narrowband signals, which are used for short-range transmission.
'Electromagnetic waves are the best mode of communication between stars,' according to the report. The earth's atmosphere is impervious to the effects of wind and rain.
Scientists are unable to identify the signals, but the signals are likely from alien civilizations, according to Peng Bo, a researcher at the National Astronomical Observatory.
According to the team, it is 'very likely' that these signals are just interference. They will repeat the observations of the signals to determine whether or not they are in fact alien signals.
Taking the place of Russia's RATAN-600, FAST is the largest filled-aperture telescope on Earth and the largest single-dish radio telescope. It has a diameter of 500 meters. This is known as the 'China Sky Eye'. It is located in the Guizhou province in southwest China.
In the future, Li Di, FAST's chief scientist, said the telescope will focus on discovering new planets and alien species.
