A giant rocket will launch into space by the end of August, according to NASA

NASA announced its plans to launch a giant, new moon rocket in August, the 53rd anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing.

NASA plans to begin the lunar test flight on Aug. 29 without astronauts and with three mannequins. Two launch dates are also scheduled in early September before NASA requires a two-week hiatus.

The new lunar program is named Artemis after Apollo's twin sister in Greek mythology, according to NASA's Jim Free.

Currently, the 30-story Space Launch System rocket and attached Orion capsule are in the Kennedy Space Center hangar after being repaired following last month's countdown test.

As NASA practiced its launch at the pad, fuel leaks and other technical problems cropped up.

NASA officials told reporters Wednesday that the problems have been resolved and testing has almost been completed.

They cautioned, however, that the launch dates may slip due to Florida's volatile weather and potential problems before the rocket returns to the pad on Aug. 18. Ahead of the development of exploration systems, Free warned, 'We'll be careful.'.

This rocket and Orion capsule stand 322 feet (98 meters) higher than the Statue of Liberty. In 2023, astronauts might climb aboard Orion for a moon loop-around, and in 2025, they could land on it.

A lunar exploration was last conducted in 1972 by astronauts. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first of the 12 astronauts to step foot on the dusty gray surface of the moon, while Michael Collins orbited the planet.

Neil Aldrin, 92, the only survivor, tweeted about the anniversary: 'Neil, Michael & I represented America as we made those giant jumps for mankind. In the finest hour of America's history, it united the world.
