A leaky spacecraft prompts NASA and SpaceX to postpone a cargo mission

A SpaceX Dragon's upcoming launch to the International Space Station has been postponed due to a possible propellant leak, a rare occurrence for the well-established cargo ship.

According to NASA, it detected “elevated vapor readings” of mono-methyl hydrazine within the propulsion system as the Dragon cargo spacecraft was being loaded with propellant yesterday. NASA says the readings were detected this past weekend, but it is unclear when they were detected.

Moreover, the space agency stated in its blog that NASA officials and SpaceX officials met yesterday to discuss the issue after unloading fuel and oxidizer from the offending portion of the spacecraft. The Dragon launch this weekend, scheduled for the International Space Station, has been canceled. Womp womp.

'The joint NASA/SpaceX team will announce a new launch date as soon as the exact cause is confirmed and the exact source of the elevated readings is identified,' NASA wrote on its blog.

According to SpaceNews, SpaceX Dragons use 16 Draco thrusters in order to maneuver the spacecraft. Dragons were introduced to use 10 years ago. Draco thrusters rely on MMH fuel and nitrogen tetroxide as an oxidizer.NASA notes that the Dragon spacecraft will (eventually) deliver the following supplies on the CRS-25 resupply mission:

A major payload aboard the cargo flight is the Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation, or EMIT. It includes new scientific investigations, supplies, and equipment for the international crew. There is also a study on immune aging and the possibility of reversing its effects.

As a result of this tool, NASA will be able to identify mineral dust from arid regions and analyze dust carried through the atmosphere by deserts to monitor climate change and to determine what effects they have on the planet. In addition, a team of Stanford University students will conduct an investigation to test the process of creating biopolymer soil composites in microgravity, a concrete alternative. It will take some time for the current ISS crew to get these goodies, but hopefully not more than a few weeks.

As part of Elon Musk's vision of a constellation of tens of thousands of internet satellites, SpaceX revealed last month the design of its next generation of Starlink satellites. However, Musk's SpaceX plans do not come without their drawbacks. According to Musk, he plans to send one million people to Mars by 2050, which is unlikely to happen within that timeframe.
