In the Rio Grande do Sul, the Porto Alegre Metropolitan Region is the most densely populated area. It accounted for 38.2% or 4.4 million inhabitants of the State in 2020, according to population estimates. While there are a lot of people in a large area, it's so small from space when compared to the size of the planet.
On July 4th, NASA published an image showing Greater Porto Alegre at night from space. This photograph was taken aboard the International Space Station
From the photograph, one can observe the city of Porto Alegre until Vila Assunç*o, in the south, and then Canoas and Alvorada in the north.
It also shows the municipalities of Eldorado do Sul, Canoas, Viamo, Alvorada, Cachoeirinha, Gravataí, Sapucaia do Sul, Esteio and São Leopoldo.
For the Rio Grande do Sul's capital, the main illuminated streets draw attention in the photograph, such as Ipiranga avenues, linking the center to Viam*o; Assis Brasil to Cachoeirinha, forking at Baltazar de Oliveira Garcia; Protásio Alves from the center, and the Terceira Perimetral going from the east to the airport.
There is also a prominent BR-290 (Freeway) and BR-116, which connect Porto Alegre to Vale dos Sinos, as well as two bridges crossing the Guaíba. Between Canoas and Estero, the Alberto Pasqualini Refinery (REFAP) lighting stands out on the BR-116.
There are still noticeable color differences in public lighting between the various cities of Greater Porto Alegre that delimit the municipalities. Canoas, for example, has more orange lighting while Porto Alegre has more white light.
