A record-tying 31st launch for SpaceX has deployed 53 more Starlink satellites

SpaceX launched 53 more internet satellites atop a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral on Sunday, matching the company's total for 2021 and maintaining a weekly schedule of one flight.

At 10:20 a.m. EDT (1420 GMT), the Falcon 9 rocket successfully launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. For the Falcon 9 launcher to lift off the pad, nine Merlin 1D engines were ignited with 1.7 million pounds of thrust and rocket-grade kerosene fuel.

As the Falcon 9 flew northeast over the Atlantic Ocean and climbed through scattered clouds, it was raining and thunderstorms moved over the spaceport as it was launching. Launcher's first stage engines shut down about a minute after passing through the speed of sound.

As the first stage separated from the upper stage, it arced to an altitude of about 84 miles before plummeting tail first back into the atmosphere, using three engines to control the re-entry.

After the rocket extended four landing legs, it burned its center engine at the last moment to settle on the deck of the U.S. drone ship 'Just Read the Instructions' about 400 miles northeast of Cape Canaveral.

In SpaceX's fleet of reusable rockets, this booster is one of the oldest. The Crew Dragon spacecraft, B1051, made its debut in March 2019 with its first unpiloted test flight. Since then, the booster has launched nine Starlink missions as well as Canada's Radarsat Constellation Mission.

The B1051 booster became SpaceX's third booster to reach the 13-flight milestone and has launched 582 satellites in its career. Falcon 9 boosters are now certified by SpaceX for at least 15 missions, an increase from the original certification of 10 flights.

SpaceX's Sunday launch, designated Starlink 4-22, followed an identical profile to most of its recent Starlink missions, with the Falcon 9's guidance computer targeting an elliptical orbit between 144 and 210 miles.

There were nearly nine minutes left in T+plus 9 minutes for the Falcon 9's upper stage to burn its single Merlin motor. Two halves of the nose shroud of the Falcon 9 were jettisoned during the upper stage firing. As the fairing shells descend under parachutes

There are two more SpaceX launches scheduled for the next week, both aimed at expanding the Starlink satellite constellation. It is anticipated that a Falcon 9 rocket will launch from Vandenberg on Thursday, and another Falcon 9 will launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sunday, July 24.
