A static fire test of SpaceX's Starship booster marks another milestone

With the successful static fire test of a prototype Super Heavy booster late Tuesday afternoon, SpaceX is one step closer to the first orbital test flight of its launch system Starship.

'Booster 7' was rolled overnight last Friday to the launch pad. SpaceX's Boca Chica development facility in southeast Texas has been working on its Starship program since 2011.

As this same booster was tested today, the damage was not catastrophic after a previous booster test resulted in an explosion on the launch pad.

The entire test lasted just a few seconds and involved only one Raptor 2, not the 33 engines that will lift Starship into space.

The engine is spun up to ignition during a static fire test, but the rocket stays on the pad so engineers can get a good idea of how the engine performs before it is launched.

Starship consists of a Super Heavy booster and an upper stage called Starship, standing 164 feet high.

The launch system, which measures 394 feet in total, is designed to be reusable by a significant margin - it's the only rocket in its class that's designed for reusability.

As part of SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's vision to spread 'the light of consciousness' throughout the universe, Musk wants to make humans multi-planetary.

A successful orbital flight is probably between one and twelve months away, Musk most recently said on Twitter. Musk has posted several possible timelines for the first orbital flight test.
