According to scientists, life may have existed on Mars for a long time

New images from NASA suggest life may have existed on Mars for a very long time.

According to scientists examining pictures taken by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, clay-bearing sediments can be seen in them.

The images show an ancient region of Mars known as Margaritifer Terra, which is littered with craters.

NASA shares an image of what it believes was once an ancient pond on the planet.

The discovery of clay on Mars will add weight to theories that the Red Planet was once flooded by water.

According to a study published in the journal Icarus, water may have been present in the Ladon basin region within Margaritifer Terra from 3.8 billion years ago until 2.5 billion years ago.

Scientist Catherine Weitz of the Planetary Science Institute in Arizona said: 'The presence of clays indicates an environment favorable for life because clays form and remain stable under neutral pH conditions where water persists over a long period of time, reducing evaporation to form other minerals, such as sulfates.'.'

She continued: 'Colourful light-toned layered sediments with low bedding dips, which contain clay across 200 kilometers of distance, are evidence that a lake existed in Ladon's basin and northern Ladon Valles.

There is a low-energy lake setting and clays on the site, so the environment is conducive to life at that time.'

However, this does not mean that life existed on Mars at any point in time even if water was once present on the planet.
