An extraordinary 'Strawberry Supermoon' will light up the night sky

Beginning Sunday night and running through June 15, the 'Strawberry Supermoon' will light up the night sky. During the closest earth approach, the moon will be at its brightest on Tuesday evening.

A full moon in June caused a dazzling display at Cape Sounion, south of Athens in Greece, which is the marble temple of Poseidon.

Moscow watched a spectacular reddish moon rise over Russia's Foreign Ministry in the country's capital. It is the juicy summer fruit that Nasa refers to instead of the Moon itself as the Strawberry Super Moon.

According to NASA, 'The Maine Farmer's Almanac published 'Indian' names for full moons for the first time in the 1930s.

'According to this Almanac, according to Algonquin tribes, the Strawberry Moon is a Full Moon at the beginning of June and the last full moon of spring.

'The name is derived from the relatively short season that strawberries are harvested in the northeastern United States in the spring/summer.'

The Full Moon in June is always particularly low in the sky, making it possible to see more of its surface than at other times of the year.

Despite its low position, the full moon won't necessarily be pink or red, although, according to NASA, it can sometimes have a rose-tinted hue due to its low position.

Mead Moon or the Honey Moon is also another name that is used to refer to the phenomenon, a period when honey is ripe and ready to be harvested, possibly to be made into mead.

During this full moon, you may have heard the term 'honeymoon', a term used to refer to the first month after marriage, in the 1500s.

The Supermoon is a phenomenon when during its elliptical orbit, the full moon aligns with the point closest to the Earth.

There is a 14 percent increase in size and a 30 percent increase in brightness during this period. Richard Nolle was the first to define the Supermoon, which has now become a widely used term.

As the astrologer explained, this phenomenon occurs 'when a new or full Moon appears at or near (within 90% of) the Moon's nearest approach to Earth in its orbit'.

Considering Nolle's theory, a moon would have to be about 226,000 miles away from the Earth if it were to be classified as a 'supermoon'.

When a Supermoon occurs, due to its relative proximity to the Earth, the celestial body's surface appears to be much larger when compared to its normal size.
