An image from the Webb telescope shows a rare type of Cartwheel galaxy

James Webb Space Telescope reveals new details and an amazing picture of a rare galaxy type through cosmic dust.

Space observatory's latest image shows the Cartwheel galaxy, a ring galaxy that formed when a spiral galaxy and a small galaxy violently collided 500 million light-years away.

The shape and structure of galaxies can change when they collide. Webb's image depicts the Cartwheel galaxy as a colorful ring surrounding an even brighter inner ring that expands away from the collision's center.

Cartwheel is classified as a ring galaxy, which is much rarer than spiral galaxies due to these features.

Webb's capabilities have allowed astronomers to gain new insights into individual stars and star formation within the chaotic galaxy, as well as the black hole at its center.

Over billions of years, the galaxy has evolved in new ways revealed by the new image.

It is evident from the image that there is a great deal of the growth of young stars among the hot dust in the bright inner ring.

Star formation and star death occur in the outer ring, which has been expanding for 440 million years. By colliding with gas, the ring expands, triggering more star formation. There are also two small companion galaxies visible in the image.

As dust accumulates, the mysteries of the Cartwheel galaxy have been obscured by the Hubble Space Telescope and other observatories.

The Webb telescope is an infrared telescope, which captures light that is invisible to the human eye, so it was able to capture new details that other instruments could not.

Webb's Near-Infrared Camera and Mid-Infrared Instrument were used to create this composite image. It captures a moment in time as the Cartwheel slowly transforms.

NASA released its first images of the Webb telescope on July 12, and more are expected in the coming weeks, according to the space agency.
