NASA made a surprising discovery on Mars thanks to the Perseverance rover on Tuesday, and researchers have no idea what to make of it.
There have been a number of discoveries of strange objects on Mars - but NASA has discovered something that was not expected.
Perseverance, the space agency's rover currently exploring Mars' Jezero Crater, took a rare photograph of a silver object wedged between two rocks that appears to have been wedged between two rocks for thousands of years.
There was some interesting news reported yesterday in the field of engineering, indicating that the shiny object that was beamed down to Earth for all to see was indeed some junk from the rover itself.
An employee of the Perseverance team took to Twitter for the purpose of explaining the 'discovery'. They wrote: 'We have spotted something unexpected on the Perseverance team's end.
'This is a small piece of a thermal blanket that may, in fact, have been taken from my descent stage, the rocket-powered jet pack that was used to set me down like a rocket on the day of landing back in 2021.'
During a roving mission on Tuesday, the rover spotted spaghetti-shaped debris. Researchers said it left them baffled. According to researchers, the piece of metal came from the front-facing hazard avoidance camera on the rover.
While the rover is driving or using its robot arm, these cameras help keep an eye on the landscape. There have been various theories regarding the origin of the junk seen by Mars' chopper Ingenuity, including previous NASA missions to the planet.
Mars Perseverance, which was launched last February, has completed its year anniversary on Mars. In 2021, NASA's Perseverance rover was gently launched onto Mars by the spacecraft carrying a $2.7billion robotic explorer.
For the first time in decades, NASA examined if there had ever been life on Mars with the greatest enthusiasm and thoroughness.
