Asteroids and Comets: How do they differ?

Asteroids and comets are two different types of objects. While an asteroid and comet may seem to have some similarities, they differ quite a bit from one another.

NASA's Near-Earth Asteroid Expert Dr. Ryan Park says that planetary objects are revolving around the Sun and are believed to be in orbit around the Sun.

An asteroid is a small, rocky object that appears to be a point of light when it is seen through a telescope,' the expert says.

Astronomers think that the majority of asteroids are located in a ring between Mars and Jupiter known as the asteroid belt.

Asteroids can have different shapes, ranging from spherical to elongated or odd. There are even asteroids that have satellites! What a wonder!

According to Dr. Park, comets also orbit the Sun, although they are composed of dust and ice, unlike asteroids which are composed of metals.

A comet's ice and dust content vaporize when it approaches the Sun. The comet will appear fuzzy and/or have a tail if viewed through a telescope.'

The greatest difference between asteroids and comets is their texture. Dr. Park summed it up. It is currently in the news that a comet is heading towards Earth.

NASA has announced a comet approaching our planet in the next few days, which can be anywhere from 30 to 160 kilometers in diameter.

From one of the Oort clouds, Comet C/2017 K2 (PanSTARRS) is coming to visit us. It was discovered for the first time in 2017.

Since it was discovered by the observatories Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System and thus the name of the comet, it was named as such.

However, it has also been called the K2 comet for short. It will reach its closest point to Earth on July 14 as it travels from the outer edges of the solar system.
