Atom Bioworks to compete for $250k in virtual BioTools Innovator accelerator program

Atom Bioworks, established in CARY, has developed AI software that binds to viruses and cancer cells, making it possible for them to be detected and killed. The company is one of 14 startups selected for an accelerator program based in Los Angeles.

In a four-month virtual offering, BioTools Innovator's annual program connects startups that develop life science tools and diagnostics with mentorship and support, as well as funding opportunities. Atom Bioworks will participate in the program.

The organization disclosed in a statement that Atom Bioworks and the 13 other cohort members were selected from more than 160 applications.

Managing director Kathryn Zavala, of BioTools Innovator, said in a statement that the company was founded to address a gap in the life science industry when promising technologies are failing due to a lack of sophisticated guidance that prevents entrepreneurs from making avoidable mistakes.

'These 14 companies represent the next frontier of innovative technologies that can help diagnose and treat diseases more effectively, as well as lead to a healthier life.'

Atom Bioworks will also prepare throughout the accelerator program for the final competition at BioTools' capstone event in October, where the winner will receive $250,000 as a prize.

The company's co-founder Sherwood Yao told WRAL TechWire in March 2020 that its technology might be able to provide more accurate, versatile, and rapid testing for the Coronavirus that causes COVID-19.  The technology was still in the research stage at that time, according to Yao.

According to WRAL TechWire, the company planned to create specific pattern-matching nanostructures from which to identify and treat Coronaviruses using artificial intelligence and synthetic DNA.

It would go on to secure a $248,000 grant from the National Science Foundation under the Rapid Response Research program in June 2020.  The DNA-based antigen detection method could detect the SP protein of COVID-19 virus spike in June 2020, providing a responsive mechanism for detecting SARS-CoV-2 infections.

According to Yao, the company's diagnostic process would be faster and simpler than other methods that existed at the time.  The company will continue to research, with the next steps along the way leading to the use of the same technology platform to kill COVID-19.

The North Carolina Biotechnology Center's senior director of investments, Ken Janoski, said in June 2020 that the approach was quite innovative.

To assist in the development of this technology to create a rapid test for COVID-19, the company won $72,054.11 in additional funding from the One North Carolina Small Business Program in February 2021.
