Cockroaches and Apollo 11 moon dust being auctioned in Boston for $400,000 belong to NASA and are not for sale

Remarkable Rarities Auction in Boston stopped selling moon dust and cockroach carcasses collected during the 1969 Apollo 11 mission.

It states that the cockroaches and moon dust were used in an Apollo 11 experiment to determine if lunar rocks contained any pathogens that might affect terrestrial life.

On May 25, three German cockroach carcasses and 40 milligrams of moon dust were auctioned and reached $400,000.

NASA's lawyer told Remarkable Rarities that all materials from the experiment were federal property, the Associated Press reported.

'All Apollo samples, as stipulated in this collection of items, belong to NASA, and no individual, university,

The entity has been permitted to keep them after analysis, destruction, or other uses, including for sale or individual display,' NASA said in a letter dated June 15.

The auction had been withdrawn by Remarkable Rarities on Thursday. The spacing material has not yet been returned to NASA.

Nasa's lawyer requested that RR Auction work with the current owner return the materials in a letter dated June 22.

RR Auction has worked with NASA before and has always cooperated with the government when it makes claims to items, Mark Zaid

An attorney for RR Auction told The Associated Press. 'At the end of the day, we want to act appropriately and legally.'
