There are a few ways to access real quantum computers over the Internet - often for free. Unfortunately, most of these are older machines with limited capabilities.
It's good for learning, but you can't do anything with it. Xanadu has, however, announced a computer capable of reaching quantum advantage that is free for anyone to use within limits.
The computer in question, Borealis, uses photonic states and can work with over 216 squeezed-state qubits.
While the company sells time on the computer, the free tier includes 5 million free shots on Borealis and 10 million free shots on an earlier series of quantum computers. Borealis also offers a pay-as-you-go service for about $100 per million shots.
Although a few million shots may sound like a lot, we noticed that the quickstart demo consumes 10,000, which is likely something simple.
That is about 500 runs of this on Borealis - not bad for free on a state-of-the-art quantum computer. You'll need a simulator, however.
Because the software you use to access the machines is named Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields, we assume the developers are Beatles fans. The job is controlled by Python, and there is a cloud simulator to save your shots.
We won't pretend to understand everything about squeezed light qubits and Borealis architecture. But you can get some general practice from our series on quantum computing. You can also attend a few lectures, including one aimed at different levels of experience.
