Earth will be passed by two asteroids the size of skyscrapers this weekend

The asteroid belt, commonly known as the region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, consists mainly of asteroids composed of rock, dust, and metallic minerals. Nevertheless, some asteroids stray from this orbit and are outside Neptune's orbit, while others come closer to the Sun.

These asteroids sometimes move close to the Earth's orbit and are called Near-Earth Objects (NEOs). NEOs must be located within 1.3 astronomical units (AU); otherwise, the distance between the Earth and the Sun must be 460 feet (140 m) for them to be considered positively hazardous objects (PHO).

It has been determined that 2016 CZ31 is the first asteroid to zip past Earth. according to a report that it will fly by today around 7 pm ET at speeds of 34,560 mph.

The asteroid, which measures 400 feet in diameter, is barely classified as a PHO but is still as big as a large city skyscraper.

The orbit of CZ31 will cover a distance of approximately seven times the distance between the Earth and the Moon. The spacecraft will fly past us at a distance of 1.7 million miles.

The Earth is also expected to pass by two other asteroids today, 2022 OG1 and 2022 NU1. In spite of this, they are relatively small and do not exceed the size of an airplane.

With a size of 600 feet, asteroid 2013 CU83 will fly by Earth tomorrow or next Saturday. A 4.3 million mile distance will also separate it from us.

It is expected that the flyby will occur around 7:37 pm ET; the larger asteroid will also move relatively slowly with a velocity of 13,153 mph.

Although these asteroids are traveling at a safe distance from the Earth, their orbits can change if the gravitational pull of other celestial bodies influences them. The orbits of objects are closely tracked by astronomers over time, but there may also be surprises.

Only a week before their flybys at a distance of 84,000 miles and 55,000 miles earlier this month, asteroids 2022 NE and 2022 NF were discovered.

Asteroids are generally small in size, so their impact on the planet would not have caused catastrophic damage, but scientists are working on ways to divert asteroids from destroying the planet in the future.

In November of last year, NASA launched a mission named the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, which crashed a spacecraft into an asteroid and observed a change in its trajectory. It is anticipated that the experiment will take place later this year.
