known as Asteroid 2022 KY4, the rock will pass the Earth on July 17 at its closest approach.
Space rocks measure around 500ft in diameter - larger than the Great Pyramid of Giza, which stands at 455ft, and taller than a New York City commercial skyscraper.
It is estimated that the asteroid is moving at a speed of 7.55 kilometers per second or 16,888 miles per hour. In August 1929, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory discovered the asteroid.
On July 12, 2022, researchers calculated the space rock's latest orbit. A space rock last approached Earth in August 1959, so this is not the first time the rock has approached.
In that flyby, the asteroid was closer than ever before, according to NASA records. There was one other encounter with the asteroid in 1948 before that one. There have been several sightings of the rock near Mars and Jupiter, along with other celestial bodies.
Within 11 years, the asteroid will pass through Mars' orbit after passing Earth this time around. We will experience a much faster approach from asteroid 2022 KY4 in 2048.
During its orbit around the Sun, an asteroid is a small rocky body. In addition to the asteroid belt (between Mars and Jupiter), asteroids can also strike the Earth at any point along their paths.
In contrast to comets, which are mainly made up of ice and gas and have long tails, asteroids are made of dust.
