Dinosaurs were wiped out when a giant asteroid hit planet Earth around 66 million years ago with all its fury.
No such deadly event has occurred on the blue planet since then, and this absence of a cataclysmic event of this magnitude has played a crucial role in human evolution.
However, several space scientists strongly believe that future asteroid impacts are possible. NASA and the European Space Agency are monitoring near-earth objects and their trajectory to prevent a collision that might question humanity's existence.
A rogue asteroid named 2021 QM1 was detected in August 2021, and scientists initially predicted that it would hit the Earth on April 02, 2052.
Originally, scientists considered this asteroid to be a dangerous space rock that may hit the earth.
'We were able to project the asteroid's future paths around the Sun, and in 2052 it could come dangerously close to Earth.
The more we observed the asteroid, the greater the risk,' said Richard Moss, ESA's Head of Planetary Defence.
Following a series of scientific observations and calculations, ESA experts have now removed this asteroid from the risk list. Having removed 2021 QM from the list, there are currently 1,377 asteroids that may strike the earth.
Dr. Iain McDonald recently told that devastating events like asteroid impacts are not confined to the past, and they may occur in the future as well.
The American physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson holds similar views, and he once suggested that the extinction of the human race may have been the result of an asteroid strike.
