From the International Space Station, the SpaceX Dragon cargo ship has returned to Earth

After returning from the International Space Station with tons of science gear, SpaceX's Dragon cargo ship splashed down in the ocean on Saturday, Aug. 20.

Today SpaceX tweeted a mission update confirming a splashdown of its Dragon spacecraft, terminating its 25th cargo resupply mission to the space station.

'The critical science within Dragon will be transported via helicopter to the Kennedy Space Center after it is retrieved by SpaceX's recovery team,' the company stated in a second Twitter post.

SpaceX launched its SpaceX-25 mission from KSC on July 14 and landed its spacecraft two days later at the International Space Station. The Dragon carried 5,800 pounds of science experiments, supplies for the crew, and other critical supplies.

Dragon, the rocket's crew capsule, undocked from the space station on Friday evening, enabling it to return to Earth by late Saturday morning with more than 4,000 pounds of science gear, as well as a host of experiments conducted on the station and the results of the experiments to scientists around the world.

As part of NASA's multibillion-dollar contract, SpaceX will use Cargo Dragon capsules to ferry supplies to and from the International Space Station.

Currently, SpaceX is one of two U.S. companies that supply the station with supplies (Northrop Grumman's Cygnus spacecraft is the other), and Sierra Nevada Space Systems is planning to offer similar services to NASA as part of its Dream Chaser project.

Additionally, the Russian Progress robotic spacecraft deliver cargo regularly, and in the past, the European Space Agency and Japan also operated their cargo ships.

SpaceX launched four of those astronauts on a Crew Dragon as part of its Crew-4 mission for NASA. At present, the space station is home to seven astronauts, including three Americans, three Russians, and one European.

It has been announced that NASA will launch Crew-5 to the space station in September, with SpaceX being the launch provider.
