Here is what happened on this day in space history

In 1971, Apollo 15 astronauts drove their first vehicle on the moon for the first time on July 31, 1971.

During the flight of Apollo 15, David Scott, the commander of the mission, and James Irwin, the pilot of the lunar module, spent three days driving around the moon in the lunar roving vehicle.

Al Worden, the pilot of the Apollo 15 command module, remained in orbit around the moon throughout the mission.

To transport this moon buggy, it was folded up and stowed inside the lunar module and then deployed after landing. In terms of its dimensions, it measured about 10 feet long, 7 feet wide, and 45 inches in height when it was unpacked.

In addition to being able to travel as fast as 8.6 miles per hour, the lunar rover also allowed the astronauts to venture farther away from their landing site than previous Apollo astronauts had been able to.

As part of their first drive, Scott and Irwin went to Elbow Crater to gather samples and take photographs. There were more than 17 miles driven by them throughout their stay on the moon.

The Apollo 15 mission was launched to the moon on July 26, 1971. Scott and Irwin concluded the mission on July 30, when they landed on the surface of the moon, after which they performed three moonwalks along with a test drive of the lunar rover.

In August, the Apollo 15 crew left the moon's surface on Aug. 2 and left lunar orbit on Aug. 4. They landed back on Earth on Aug. 7 after splashing down in the Pacific Ocean after leaving the lunar orbit on Aug. 2.
