How to see shooting stars during late-summer meteor showers in 2022

As the summer season ends, it is expected that a great number of stargazers will be able to observe the night sky in the second half of the summer months.

According to Earthsky.org, two successive meteor showers - the Delta Aquariids and the Perseids - will brighten up the night sky with shooting stars and possibly even fireballs over the next few days.

At present, the Delta Aquariids will be flying from now until the 21st of August, generating an average of 20 meteors per hour since they fly at a maximum speed of 220 kilometers per hour.

With an average peak time of 2 a.m., they reach their peak each night. While they are fainter than the Perseid meteor shower that follows, they are still very impressive.

The Delta Aquariid meteors that have passed over the Earth are known to leave persistent ionized gas trails, which persist for a second or two after the meteor has passed by, Earthsky states. The Delta Aquariids are best observed from the Southern Hemisphere, especially if you live in the southern United States.

The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most well-known in the history of meteor showers. The Perseid has been a staple of the sky and will likely remain so for a while since it begins on Sept. 1.

A peak of the Perseid meteor shower is expected to occur in early August from Aug. 11-13, but due to moonglow, it is suggested that the best time to watch for shooting stars will be from late evening until dawn in the early morning hours.

As many as 90 meteors per hour can be expected to be produced by the Perseids, making them one of the most prolific meteor showers.

When the Perseid meteor shower occurs in August, it is likely to produce colorful meteors with persistent streaks that are well worth a look to catch a glimpse of these spectacular meteors.
