The parts of a lunar station are shown coming together in a new NASA video.
NASA Johnson Space Center's YouTube video(opens in a new tab) shows the assembly process for Gateway, a space station that will support Artemis human missions to the moon.
Except for the International Space Station (ISS), which has hosted crews continuously since 2000, the Lunar Orbiting Station (LOS) is likely to host crews only occasionally, which makes it different from the International Space Station (ISS).
There is, however, a commonality between both stations that allows them to be quickly assembled by astronauts as well as machines.
According to the video, Gateway will launch with a Maxar Technologies power and propulsion element docking with a Northrop Grumman logistics and habitation outpost. The first crew and the I-Hab (habitat module) supplied by the European Space Agency will follow them.
In the video, you can see the sequence of human missions and other elements that will arrive on the space station, such as the robotic arm Canadarm3, which was built by MDA for the Canadian Space Agency.
Although it has been removed from the 'critical path' for the first missions, Gateway will serve as a supply station for moon missions.
This mission is the inaugural mission for the Artemis series of manned and unmanned flights, dubbed Artemis 1, which is scheduled to launch on August 29.
A crewed moon orbiting mission, known as Artemis 2, is scheduled for 2024, as well as an uncrewed crewed landing mission, known as Artemis 3.
