There is a humongous asteroid approaching Earth right now that is 'building-sized'. NASA has issued a warning about the threat. After an asteroid the size of an airplane hurtled very close to our planet, the development came a day later.
However, reports indicate that several asteroids are flying through the area and heading toward Earth. Does this asteroid pose any threat to the Earth?
The asteroid will miss Earth, but not by a large margin, according to media reports. NASA predicts that the asteroid will be about 3.8 million miles away or 6.1 million km away from Earth.
Knowing this distance is greater than 16 times the distance between the Earth and the moon will lead to a deeper understanding.
Essentially, this is still a greater distance than asteroid 2022 NF, which passed close to Earth on July 7 within 56,000 miles, about 23 percent of the average distance between Earth and the moon.
According to NASA, the diameter of asteroid 2022 KY4 is around 290 feet or 88 meters. It is estimated to be traveling at a speed of 16,900 mph. As a reference, the Statue of Liberty in London measures 151 feet high. In other words, this huge asteroid is even bigger than the Statue of Liberty!
NASA stated that this is not the first time that this area of rock has made its closest approach to the Earth. Earlier, the asteroid 2022 KY4 had made its closest approaches to our planet in 1959 and 1948, respectively.
By the looks of the sample, it won't make another close approach to our planet until 2048.
