SpaceX and T-Mobile are partnering to plug the average mobile phone into a satellite communications network would not be the last.
Apple is expected to announce that its iPhone will connect to a satellite constellation by Globalstar. AST SpaceMobile plans to launch satellites next year.
Mobile Phones towers in densely populated places have made high-quality connectivity where the satellites can make sense.
Satellite phones are fairly large, expensive, and reserved for extreme situations that Aid workers in remote parts of developing countries or scientists in Antarctica.
Phone connecting to satellite is s hard because of the distance and power. Mobile phones are designed to talk within 10km, whereas satellites are 500 km away and move more than 17,000 mph.
Customers of Starlink, SpaceX's internet satellite network, connect using a base station 20 inches by 12 inches. It makes the connection work without enlarging the phone in your pocket.
The satellites, known as second-generation Starlink satellites, will be redesigned with new antennas that use the T-Mobile spectrum.
Globalstar disclosed in financial filings that a large global customer is partnering with a new communications network, and this customer paid $300 million so it could buy 17 new satellites.
The mobile phone customer does not have much time outside the service area, so the millions of dollars of investment required to make satellite linkages will pay off for handset manufacturers and telecom firms. For SpaceX, the partnership represents much-needed revenue for its expense Starlink project.
