NASA's Voyager probes have travelled to interstellar space for 45 years, and you can celebrate their 45th anniversary with a free science webcast tonight.
In Pasadena, California, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory will host a live lecture tonight at 7 p.m. PDT to highlight.
the Voyager mission, which launched two spacecraft in 1977 towards the outer solar system. Yesterday was the 45th anniversary of the launch of Voyager 2, the first of those to launch.
The webcast will be hosted by Brian White of JPL's Public Services Office and co-hosted by JPL spokesperson Calla Cofield. The live feed can be viewed above or directly on JPL's YouTube channel.
JPL officials said in an announcement: 'As the twin Voyager spacecraft approach their 45th anniversary, we take a look at what they've accomplished, what they've taught us, and what the future holds.
As Suzanne Dodd, Voyager Project Manager, we will discuss how Voyager came into existence, highlight some of Voyager's key discoveries, and hear stories about this mission that has attracted so much attention over the years.
Voyager 2 was launched Aug. 20, 1977, followed a few weeks later by Voyager 1 on Sept. 5. As Voyager 2 visited Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, Voyager 1 visited Saturn and Uranus. Meanwhile, Voyager 1 flew by Jupiter and Saturn.
Two spacecraft captured close-up images of the outer planets, with Voyager 1 snapping the famed 'Pale Blue Dot' image of Earth from 3.7 billion miles away.
A faint blue speck in the vast darkness of space became an iconic image of exploration and the vastness of the universe.
The Voyager 1 spacecraft entered interstellar space in 2012, making history. In December 2018, Voyager 2 followed suit. They are NASA's longest-running space missions and the farthest human-built objects in space.
