Jupiter Images You Might Have Missed from the Webb Space Telescope

I'm the James Webb Space Telescope, speaking to you from Jupiter. Are you ready for your  The JWST has been releasing incredible images over the past 48 hours, but it missed one big target: Jupiter, the gas giant.

One of the images of the planet and some of its moons has been spotted in a commissioning document detailing the commissioning activities of the next-generation telescope.

Space Telescope Science Institute has the document, but we have the images below.

When Webb was testing its ability to track moving targets, it turned its attention to Jupiter. The Near Infrared Camera on Webb took two images at two different wavelengths.

F212N is used for the shorter wavelength. For the longer wavelength, the F323N filter is used. Incredibly, the exposure time was only 75 seconds.

Although it doesn't stack up to the bounty of images released over the past 48 hours, it's still pretty gnarly. Europa's shadow and the Great Red Spot are visible, along with the bands across the gas giant.

It is stated in the commissioning document that JWST's ability to track fast-moving objects is better than expected which suggests that it will be able to study things like near-Earth asteroids

As a whole, JWST has exceeded its 'demanding pre-launch performance expectations' and is only beginning its many years of scientific discovery.

There have been growing calls to rename JWST for several years despite the excitement surrounding the first batch of images, prompting an inquiry from NASA that ended in 2021.

An investigation into the telescope's namesake and his role in homophobic government policies has been completed, and the name will not be changed.

A NASA update is expected in the coming weeks, but details of its investigation have not been revealed.
