NASA and other agencies continue to search for evidence of biological activity on Mars. Researchers are also searching for signs of ancient life so they can prove that the Red Planet was once habitable.
There has been a claim by a group of researchers that they have discovered evidence that might indicate that Mars was habitable for a long time.
Their study was published online in the journal Icarus by the research team. NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter produced images of the Martian surface that were examined by scientists.
There was a specific area called Margaritifer Terra, which was the subject of the study. Margaritifer Terra is an ancient and heavily cratered area on Mars that is known as the Red Planet's Margaritifer Terra.
Scientists believe they have found clay-bearing sediments in the area. The clay on Mars indicates that there was once water on the planet.
The study suggests that water was present in the area between 3.8 billion years ago and around 2.5 billion years ago.
Dr. Catherine Weitz, a senior scientist at Planetary Science Institute in Arizona, commented: 'Also, colorful layers of sediment.
Considering the low-energy lake setting, clays present in the area would have supported a favorable environment for life at the time.'
Unfortunately, this does not constitute evidence of life. Mars may have been habitable based on the evidence provided by this study.
If a planet had the right conditions for life, it does not necessarily mean that life would or has always existed on that planet.
