NASA Prepares the New Moon Explorer to Solve the Lunar Mystery

NASA plans to return space exploration back to the moon in the next decade. The agency's grandiose Artemis plan aims to realise sci-fi fantasies like lunar ground stations, vehicles, power sources, and 'Lunanet.'

NASA updated its Gruithuisen Domes project on Thursday. Telescopes on Earth reveal scientists dome-shaped structures on the moon. After years of study, many determined the Gruithuisen Domes are constructed of magma rich in silica and similar to granite.

NASA: 'On Earth, siliceous volcanoes form from water and plate tectonics.' The moon has neither. The Gruithuisen Domes' formation is a mystery. Why?

In parallel with the Artemis missions, NASA is preparing to investigate the weird lunar enigmas with Lunar-VISE.

Two Lunar-VISE components will be installed on a fixed moon lander and three on a mobile rover. Lunar-VISE will investigate the regolith on top of the domes, which is loose rock and dust.

NASA's Science Mission Directorate deputy assistant administrator for exploration Joel Kearns said the purpose is to research 'geologic processes of early planetary bodies preserved on the moon'

NASA hopes this will assist decode the domes' composition and the Gruithuisen story. This could inform future Artemis missions that'll take men or robots to Earth's shining companion, because landing any sort of item on the moon could benefit from knowing what all lunar landing surfaces are like.

Along with Lunar-VISE, NASA also revealed another Artemis mission. The organisation wants to send a form of yeast to the moon using the LEIA science suite. The team will then observe the creature under microgravity and space radiation.

NASA says Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an useful model of human biology in genetics, cellular and molecular replication and division, and DNA damage response to radiation.

The Artemis yeast experiment could help biological investigations on Earth and reveal how space affects the body. This is a key problem as commercial and science-motivated spaceflight continues to speed up, suggesting we're already in the second Apollo age.
