NASA reveals the stunning targets for Webb Telescope's first images

Earlier this month, NASA's James Webb Space Telescope unveiled its first full-color images and spectroscopic data, giving us a glimpse at what's to come.

NASA's live broadcast on Tuesday, July 12, begins at 10:30 a.m. EDT (7:30 a.m. PDT) with the list of cosmic objects Webb targeted for these first observations. ESA and CSA partner with Webb to share each image simultaneously on social media and their websites.

Webb has officially begun the general science operations with these targets, which are the first full-color images and spectra the observatory has gathered. A committee of representatives from NASA, the ESA, the CSA, and the Space

It is one of the brightest and largest nebulae in the sky, measuring approximately 7,600 light-years away in the southern constellation Carina. Nebulas are stellar nurseries where stars form. Many massive stars in the Carina Nebula are several times larger than the Sun.

Located nearly 1,150 light-years from Earth, WASP-96 b is a giant gas giant that orbits its star every 3.4 days. It has about half the mass of Jupiter.

Southern Ring, or Eight-Burst nebula, is a planetary nebula - an expanding cloud of gas surrounding a dying star. The nebula occupies an area of nearly half a light-year.

As the first compact galaxy group discovered in 1877, Stephan's Quintet lies about 290 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus. Within the quintet, four of the five galaxies are locked in a cosmic dance of repeated close encounters.

Objects behind massive foreground galaxy clusters are magnified and distorted, allowing a deep field view into both extremely distant and intrinsically faint galaxies.

Webb's science operations have begun with the release of these first images, which will explore the mission's key science themes going forward. A competitive process has already allowed teams to use the telescope during its first 'cycle,' or the first year of observations.
