NASA satellite leaves Earth's orbit and heads to the moon

On Monday, a satellite the size of a microwave oven successfully broke free from its orbit around the Earth and is headed for the moon

NASA's mission to land astronauts on the moon again has taken another step toward realization with the breaking free of a satellite the size of a microwave oven on Monday.

The Capstone satellite has already had an unusual journey. Rocket Lab launched it six days ago in one of their small Electron rockets from New Zealand's Mahia Peninsula. In four months, the satellite will reach the moon, cruising along using minimal energy.

Founder Peter Beck told The Associated Press that expressing his excitement was difficult. It will probably take some time for it to sink in. This has been a two-and-a-half-year project that has been incredibly, incredibly difficult to accomplish, he said. As a result, seeing that spacecraft going to the moon tonight is just absolutely amazing.

According to Beck, the relatively low cost of the mission, estimated by NASA to be USD 32.7 million, marked the beginning of a new era in space exploration.

Beck said there are now rockets and spacecraft that can take you to the moon, asteroids, Venus, and Mars for some tens of millions of dollars. This is a never-before-seen capability.

The Capstone satellite will return vital information for months as it takes a near-rectilinear halo orbit around the moon: an egg-shaped orbit with one end passing close to the moon and the other far away.

NASA plans to eventually construct a space station called Gateway, from which astronauts can descend to the moon's surface, as part of its Artemis program.

The new orbit minimizes fuel consumption and allows satellites or space stations to stay in constant contact with Earth.

Launched from New Zealand on June 28, the Electron rocket carried a second spacecraft called Photon, which separated after nine minutes. Satellite was carried by Photon for six days, with periodic firing of the spacecraft's engines to raise its orbit.

On Monday, Photon broke free of Earth's gravitational pull after a final engine burst. According to plans, the 25-kilogram (55-pound) satellite will fly over the moon before falling back into its new lunar orbit on Nov. 13. To make a few course corrections along the way, the satellite will utilize tiny amounts of fuel.

In the coming days, Beck said that they would decide what to do with Photon, which had completed its tasks and still had some fuel remaining.
