NASA selects two daring astronauts for the first crewed test flight of Boeing's Starliner

NASA has chosen two astronauts to fly aboard the troubled Starliner spacecraft in preparation for Boeing's first crewed test flight later this year.

The space agency announced on Friday that Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore will fly on the Crew Flight Test (CFT), whose launch date will be determined by the end of July. As a result of the successful Orbital Flight Test-2 (OFT-2) in May, which launched the spacecraft to the International Space Station and back, Boeing is now ready to test Starliner with a two-person crew aboard.

This is crucial for Boeing's $4.3 billion contracts with NASA's Commercial Crew Program, which will transport astronauts to the International Space Station via a CST-100 Starliner spacecraft if all goes well. Of course, OFT-2 had some hiccups, such as a failed thruster used for orbital maneuvering, as well as a slew of other issues and delays.

Although NASA has purchased five additional missions from SpaceX, NASA appears to be committed to Boeing's Starliner, which is flying astronauts to the ISS since 2020.

The first CFT will be commanded by Wilmore, who spent six months on the ISS in 2014 and 2015 and piloted by Williams, who served on two long-duration ISS missions in 2006 and 2007 and in 2012 again. Williams replaced NASA astronaut Nicole Mann on the inaugural Starliner crew.

Mann will instead take part in SpaceX's Crew-5 mission, which is scheduled to launch in September. As the mission's backup pilot, NASA astronaut Mike Fincke will be training as the mission's Joint Operations Commander.

A short-duration mission with two astronaut test pilots is sufficient to meet NASA and Boeing test objectives for CFT based on current space station resources and scheduling requirements, NASA said. 'This includes demonstrating the capability of Starliner to safely fly operational crewed missions to and from the space station,' NASA said in a statement.

United Launch Alliance's Atlas V rocket will launch Boeing's Starliner from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Starliner could be certified for regular, long-duration crewed missions to the ISS if all goes well.
