NASA's Crew-5 astronauts are just about to launch aboard SpaceX

The next group of four astronauts to be sent into space aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule are getting close to completing their training for their mission to the International Space Station next month, NASA reports.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket will blast NASA astronauts Nicole Mann and Josh Cassada into space along with Koichi Wakata of JAXA and Anna Kikina of Roscosmos from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center.

As part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, SpaceX will launch its fifth crew rotation mission to the International Space Station on September 29. It will also be the company's sixth flight of astronauts to the ISS.

A notable accomplishment is Kikina's trip aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon, the nation's spacecraft usually used to transport spacefarers between Earth and the station.

NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas has been training for the upcoming mission, while SpaceX's headquarters in Hawthorne, California has been training for Crew Dragon flights to and from the station.

They learned about the space station and received training for spacewalks, which are necessary for upgrading or maintaining the station. Lessons in Russian language, robotics, T-38 jet flying, and science are also included in the training package.

A lot of our attention goes to what they're going to need for the space station mission,” Cassie Rodriquez, Crew-5 chief training officer at Johnson, says on NASA's website.

The crew members have also participated in scenarios that will help them develop teamwork and expeditionary skills as well as how to live and work with others in high-stress and dangerous situations.

As a team, they have shown leadership, toughness, and focus in everything that they do. It is very inspiring to see how dedicated the crew is to make the mission a success, and to human spaceflight in general.

The Crew-5 astronauts are scheduled to travel to the ISS aboard the reusable SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft that carried the Crew-3 astronauts to and from the ISS in November 2021.

As a result of years of development and a wealth of data gathered from successful missions of the crewless Cargo Dragon spacecraft, SpaceX launched the first astronauts into space on a Crew Dragon in the summer of 2020.
