NASA's James Webb telescope reveals a new view of the universe

NASA's new James Webb Space Telescope has provided the first image from the telescope. Although it may appear that there are a few tiny specks in the universe, they are actually galaxies that are billions of years old.

'On Monday, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said the image represents just one little speck of the universe, which is comparable to holding a grain of sand at arms length.

This image also shows some of the very first galaxies to form in the universe. Nelson said more images captured by the James Webb Space Telescope should reveal whether galaxies in the far, far distance are habitable.

NASA and the White House released the first pictures from the telescope since its launch from Earth over six months ago. Biden described Monday's announcement as 'a historic day.'

NASA was planning to release the picture today as part of a collection of first scientific results, but believed that this image was so significant that Vice President Biden should be the one to reveal it.

There will be no greater telescope than the $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope. Last December, it left Earth. Late in January, the spacecraft reached its celestial parking place a million miles from Earth. The telescope's instruments have been tested, aligned, and cooled down since then so they can perform properly.

'The Webb telescope was built to discover the first generation of galaxies after the big bang,' says Jane Rigby, operations project scientist. That is the primary purpose for which it was built.'

Mission managers wanted to make early release observations before declaring the telescope open for business. 'These images should be jaw-droppingly beautiful and powerful both artistically and scientifically,' Rigby says.

NASA is also planning to release images of a stellar nursery in which stars form, called the Carina Nebula, the Southern Ring Nebula, and a cluster of galaxies named Stephan's Quintet, which was discovered in 1787.

The light coming from a giant planet outside the solar system with the prosaic name WASP-96b will also be analyzed. On Tuesday morning, we will be able to see the additional images.
