Nature's robot hands: dead spiders

It wasn't the story you were expecting to read today, nor was it the story I was expecting to write.

I think it's fair to say that the Rice University mechanical engineers didn't anticipate this path to emerge from their work, either, based on their interviews on the subject. Despite this, we all discuss dead spiders as 'neurorobotics grippers.'

These researchers are investigating how dead arachnids can be used as robotic grippers using hydraulic pressure, which may be a case of bio-inspired robotics gone too far.

The legs of spiders are moved by blood pressure. Those hydraulic pressures disappear when they die because their hearts stop beating.

It is for this reason that they curl up into a ball when they die. Combined with air from a syringe, they make a handy robotic gripper that is easy to use.

Soft robotics provides an exciting opportunity to work with previously unknown actuation and materials, says Assistant Professor of Engineering Daniel Preston.

This line of inquiry applies to the spider. The technology has never been used before, but it has great potential.'

According to Preston, the potential includes microelectronic assembly. In my opinion, it's hard to imagine anyone selling dead wolf spiders on a large scale.

But they are surprisingly robust, going through around 1,000 open-close cycles before breaking down. Regarding biodegradable systems, a polymeric coating may be able to solve that problem.

A spider's strength increases proportionally to its weight when it gets smaller (not that the whole thing isn't unique).
