New Moon crater leaves scientists puzzled by its peculiar shape

Last week, NASA announced the discovery and claimed that the origin was 'uncertain.'

An impact has created a new 'double crater' on the moon, but no country has claimed responsibility.

It was revealed last week that the crater is a combination of two craters, both roughly 19.5 yards and 17.5 yards in diameter.

NASA reports that the moon's formation was 'unexpected' but is possibly the result of a projectile that had 'large masses at each end.'

It is possible, however, that this is not the case. 'Most spent rockets have mass concentrated at the motor end; the remaining rocket stage mainly consists of an empty fuel tank,' NASA wrote.

The object of unknown origin impacted the moon in March, and its impact stood out from the rest. The NASA said 'no other rocket body impacts' have caused a double crater on the moon.

In an interview with Live Science, astronomer Bill Gray said he was 'fairly convinced' the object was the spent upper stage of China's Chang'e 5-T1 rocket.

Live Science reported that Gray predicted the debris would hit the moon after seeing it in space in 2015.

According to the news site, he initially believed the debris was from a SpaceX rocket, but it turned out to be from a rocket launched by China in 2014.

According to Chinese officials, the rocket 'burned up' in 2014 and returned to Earth, despite the US Pentagon's space junk tracking program saying it was still in space in March, Live Science reported.
