One tiny speck of space debris can cause this much damage at 15,000 mph

There is a lot of space debris in outer space, as well as scrap, trash, and machinery that humans have abandoned in Earth's orbit.

It is estimated that there are around 500,000 of these small pieces hurtling around our planet at 15,000 mph, according to the ISS. That's 14.17 g. At 24,140 km/h.

On Reddit, an anonymous aerospace worker posted a photo showing what a 1/2oz of space debris can do to solid aluminum.

The test was performed with a light-gas gun in close quarters and shows that even a small amount of space debris can cause damage:

What a scary thought, huh? However, despite the fact that the crater appears enormous, it is about 5 inches deep. On the other hand, it is caused by the size and weight of the eraser on the end of the pencil.

A football field is a size of the ISS (International Space Station), which makes it a prime target for space debris.

This can be resolved by moving its orbit to ensure that it doesn't get hit. It happens from time to time that the ISS gets hit by small pieces the size of paint chips, which require weeks of repairs.

Can you tell me what it is? Would you like to know another interesting fact about space debris? The U.S. attempted to detect high-power radio signals during the height of the Cold War in 1965-1967 by firing hundreds of thousands of tiny needles into space.

As expected, this did not work nearly as well as planned, resulting in the needles clumping together into groups and turning into high-velocity projectiles.

In 50 years, about 38 of these clumps are still in orbit, although sometimes they burn up in Earth's atmosphere.
