Pollution by humans might be causing clouds to form near the edge of space

The late spring/early summer season in the northern hemisphere is a convenient time to search for noctilucent clouds.

Noctilucent, which roughly translates into 'night shine', is a good term to describe these beautiful forms of clouds that can be seen in the sky at night.

The glowing electric blue color of the clouds can be seen against the darkening western sky about 30 minutes after the sun has set.

The highest known clouds in our atmosphere, noctilucent clouds, exist at about 80km, almost at the edge of space.

Approximately 100km above the earth lies the Kármán line, which marks the boundary between the atmosphere and outer space.

The formation of noctilucent clouds is unclear. Every cloud must be formed around a 'nucleus', which is usually a dust grain.

As such material gets as high as it does in the tenuous upper levels of the atmosphere, the problem is how it gets there. The disintegration of meteors is thought to cause the dust.

A second possibility is that pollutants made by humans can act as nuclei in the upper atmosphere, increasing the effect over the past few centuries resulting from human action.

According to this theory, noctilucent clouds are caused by industrial pollution, and if that is true, this may explain why there do not seem to have been any reported sightings of them before 1885.
