Terry Virts, a former NASA astronaut and test pilot in the US Air Force, has had enough of Russia's provocations, especially when it comes to its cooperation with the US on board the International Space Station.
Virts penned a scorching opinion piece for The Hill, suggesting that the US disengage Russia from the ISS partnership and limit ISS collaboration to the absolute minimum required for safe operation of the ISS.'
Russia is using the International Space Station as a propaganda tool for killing thousands of innocent Ukrainians and causing global economic destruction,' writes Virts. 'To put things in perspective, Putin has essentially returned Europe to 1941.'
Russian attacks on Ukraine have seemingly had little impact on ISS operations, but a recent stunt involving cosmonauts holding flags of two unrecognized Ukrainian territories has triggered international tension on the usually apolitical space station.
A NASA statement issued last week condemned Russian abuse of the International Space Station for spreading anti-Ukraine propaganda, declaring that NASA 'strongly condemns using the space station to support the war against Ukraine.
Fundamentally inconsistent with the station's primary purpose among the 15 international participating countries to advance science and technology for peaceful purposes.'
Virts stated that the stunt was a 'blatant symbol of the occupation of eastern Ukraine as well as an apparent declaration of support for the war,' which undercuts Russia's importance on the International Space Station.
'Russia has chosen to use the ISS as a propaganda tool for aggression rather than a symbol of peace and unity,' the former astronaut asserted.
Furthermore, Virts criticized Dmitry Rogozin, the head of Russia's space program, for becoming 'unhinged,' tweeting 'not-so-veiled threats,' and suggesting that Russia could 'leave American astronauts stranded in space.'
Thus, Virts argues, the US should begin shutting itself off from Russia in orbit immediately, which is an outstanding technical challenge. In order to eliminate our dependence on Russian thrusters, NASA would need to build its own control module within a year.
'My sincere hope is that we will one day be able to work together in a post-Putin Russia, but for the time being, NASA and other partner nations must begin to disengage.'
