In regards to Russian cooperation with the US on board the International Space Station, former NASA astronaut Terry Virts has had enough of Russia's provocations.
Virts' opinion piece for The Hill was harsh, asserting the US 'should begin the process of disengaging Russia from the international ISS partnership' and limit 'ISS cooperation to the absolute minimum necessary for its safe operation.'
It is impossible to maintain ISS business as usual while Russia uses it for propaganda, killing thousands of innocent Ukrainians and causing global economic devastation, writes Virts. Keeping things in perspective, Putin has essentially recreated 1941 in Europe.'
ISS operations appear to have remained relatively unaffected by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but a recent stunt with cosmonauts holding flags of two Ukrainian territories recognized only by Russia and Syria as independent turned the typically apolitical space station into a hotbed of international conflict.
ISS access was abused by Russia to spread anti-Ukraine propaganda last week, NASA stated in a statement, 'Nature rebukes the use of the International Space Station for political purposes to support the war against Ukraine, which is incompatible with the station's primary purpose among 15 international participating countries to advance science and technology.'.'
As a result of the shocking stunt, Virts called Russia's presence on the ISS an apparent declaration of support for the war. He summed up Russia's value on the ISS as a 'blatant symbol of occupiers' and a 'declaration of support for the military.'.
'Russia has chosen to use the International Space Station (ISS) as a propaganda tool for aggression, even though it is supposed to be a symbol of peace and unity,' explained the retired astronaut.
Additionally, Virts says Russian space program head Dmitry Rogozin has 'become unhinged,' tweeting 'not-so-veiled threats,' and suggesting America could be left 'stranded in space.'
To avoid being interconnected with Russia in orbit, the US should cut off from it immediately, according to Virts, which would be a very difficult technical challenge for the US. To eliminate dependence on Russian thrusters, NASA would need to build 'its new control module within a year.'
'While I hope that someday we'll resume cooperation in a post-Putin Russia, NASA and other partners must make the tough decision to disengage.'
